The more I see of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, the more I like it. With its December release date approaching quickly, Paramount may have another holiday hit on their hands, much like they did a few years back with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. They seem to be marketing this upcoming prequel quite well and if the trailers are to be believed, we’re in for a thrilling ride come Christmas time.
Today, we have a new international trailer for the film, which sees star Chris Pine (who looks great in the role, by the way) engaging in more globe-trotting shenanigans as he teams up with his CIA handler (played by Kevin Costner) to stop a terrorist plot led by the villainous Kenneth Branagh (who’s also on directing duties).
As I mentioned before, the film is a prequel, which means we get to see the titular super spy during his early days at the CIA. It’s being billed as a reboot of sorts too, which should be interesting seeing as we’ve already watched several actors step into the shoes of the iconic character. Pine’s take on Ryan definitely looks refreshing and his leading man chops, as seen in films like Star Trek and its sequel, seem to be on full display here, proving that he can truly carry a franchise.
Co-stars Costner, Branagh and Keira Knightley (as Ryan’s love interest) look solid as well, ensuring that even if Pine can’t single-handedly carry the action blockbuster, he’ll have ample help surrounding him.
So ya, I’m really digging what I’ve seen from Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit thus far. It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun and though I’m expecting a fairly straight-forward spy thriller, Pine’s charisma and general likeability mixed with Branagh’s talent behind the camera and the excellent supporting players should make this one to watch.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit opens on December 25th, 2013. Check out the new trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
