We all know that some of the biggest heroes in the MCU aren’t going to make it through Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel, Avengers 4. In fact, it looks like one of the doomed characters has been revealed, as Chris Evans heavily hinted not too long ago that he was now done with playing Captain America, saying that he was going to “miss a lot” about working for Marvel Studios.
While appearing on Good Morning America today to promote both Infinity War and his new play Lobby Hero, Evans was asked on-air if he really was saying goodbye to Steve Rogers. Obviously, the veteran MCU actor was careful to choose his words, but he didn’t do anything to convince us that he was staying. In fact, he reiterated that his contract is up after Avengers 4.
“Well, the contract is done. A lot of our contracts are through. Myself, [Robert] Downey Jr., [Chris] Hemsworth, we all started roughly at the same time, and I think we all through ‘Avengers 4’ kind of wrap it up. I don’t know what’s next — but by 2019, that’s it.”
Cap has long been considered one of, if not THE, most likely hero to meet their end in Avengers 4. Chris Evans has been hinting that his MCU exit might come sooner rather than later for years, even suggesting he wanted to give up acting as a whole at one stage. So, it stands to reason that he would choose to leave the franchise behind as soon as his contract was over.
In story terms, though, it would also make a lot of sense that Steve Rogers’ arc comes to a close in the movie. Cap is the first Avenger, after all, and he’s been fighting the good fight since World War II. If Infinity War and Avengers 4 really do close the book on the first ten years of the MCU, it would be very symbolic if Steve was to give his life in the fight against Thanos. Not that this would be the end for the mantle of Captain America, mind you, as it would most likely be handed down to Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes.
Could the end be nigh for Steve Rogers? We’ll likely find out when Avengers: Infinity War hits screens on April 27th.
