Since squaring off against a fleet of souped-up vigilantes in Kick-Ass and wreaking revenge on the popular crowd in Carrie, Chloe Grace Moretz has established herself as a force to be reckoned with. Coupled with a recent supporting turn in Clouds Of Sils Maria that brought out the manipulative savage within, and it’s safe to say that she’s at her best when playing characters who rage against the system. For her next outing, young adult adaptation The 5th Wave, she’s up against her biggest opponent yet — aliens.
Based on Rick Yancey’s novel, the film casts Moretz as Cassie, a 16-year old who grows up during a time when Earth is under constant attack from an unknown race of marauding aliens. Each cycle of which is called a ‘wave.’ The first wiped out their power, the second brought down the fury of mother nature’s wrath, the third introduced a deadly airborne pathogen and the fourth saw those extraterrestrials invading the planet with infiltrating ground units. All in all a bad day for mankind, and in particular, our heroine Cassie, who strives to fight off those blasted creatures while tracking down her missing brother.
The Disappearance of Alice Creed‘s J. Blakeson directs the sci-fi yarn, giving us good reason to expect a solid thriller that rises above the stale ‘post-apocalyptic’ trend. Flecks of Independence Day crop up throughout this sophomore trailer, interspersed with the prevalent teenage angle we’ve come to expect from other such dystopian adventures like The Hunger Games.
Find out whether The 5th Wave will make a splash when it opens on January 15, 2016. Maika Monroe, Liev Schreiber, Maggie Siff and Ron Livingston co-star.
