As one of millions of fans of Zack Snyder’s smash hit 300, I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of the sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire, based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel Xerxes. We’ve already seen one gloriously beautiful trailer for the upcoming film that showed off the multiple characters and the CGI world they inhabit, but now we have another, shorter international trailer for your viewing pleasure.
Granted, it’s not really anything we haven’t seen before. In fact, it’s pretty much just a condensed version of the first trailer, but it’s still quite stunning to look at. Snyder, who acted as producer on the film, couldn’t direct this time around (Man of Steel kept the man pretty busy), so instead they got Noam Murro, who helmed Smart People (yeah, I never heard of it before now either), to direct from a script by Snyder and Kurt Johnstad.
For those wondering what the upcoming film will be about, here’s a synopsis to fill you in:
After its victory over Leonidas’ 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes’ army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.
It’s a little disconcerting that the film was delayed from its original release date and moved all the way to next year, an act that tends to denote problems with the production, but I’m going to try and remain optimistic about it due to how great the first film was. It’s still several months away, so we’ll just have to be patient for a little bit longer. Until then, enjoy this latest glimpse at the film.
300: Rise of an Empire, which stars Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, and Jack O’Connell, arrives in theaters on March 7th, 2014.
