Variety is reporting that Charlotte Gainsbourg is currently in talks to star in Lars Von Trier’s next film, The Nymphomaniac. The film, which is set to begin filming in the second half of 2012, is described as “an explicit exploration of female sexuality from ages 0 to 50”.
Though not officially stated, it is pretty obvious that the role Gainsbourg is in talks for is the main part of the Nymphomaniac. If things pan out, this will be Gainsbourg’s third film with von Trier the previous two being Antichrist in 2009, and Melancholia in 2011.
Other frequent collaborators of von Triers, Stellan Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe, have also confirmed that they have both been offered parts. No details are know about Dafoe’s part but Skarsgård recently said the following.
“Lars called me and said ‘Stellan, my next film will be a porno and I want you to play the lead in it, but then he said, ‘You will not get to fuck.”
It has also been reported that the film will have 8 chapters, and that there will be a hard and soft version, the latter being for a commercial release of the film which von Trier has described as a porno.
To me it has always made perfect sense that Gainsbourg would end up as the title character, she has shown through her performance in Antichrist that she is pretty much up for anything on screen.
With the film gearing up for production, we will hopefully have more news for you soon.
The Nymphomaniac will be released in 2013.
