The Weinstein Company’s fifth installment in the long-stagnant Scary Movie franchise has just upped its trash celebrity cred, as according to E!, Scary Movie 5 has just added controversial tabloid figures Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan.
If you remember (I won’t fault you if you don’t) Sheen appeared in both Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4 as the character Tom Logan, one of the many randomly assembled players in the series of loosely linked skits that comprise these films. Lohan on the other hand is rumoured to be playing an individual by the name of Heather Daltry, possibly one of three dancers who will compete for the lead in a new high school production.
Scary Movie 4 debuted way back in 2006, so the return of the series (which has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide) will mean a seven-year hiatus when number five is released some time in 2013. We’ve seen gestating franchises such as the American Pie and Scream brands suffer upon their return and considering the now-toxic reception for these types of spoofs (courtesy of hack Epic Movie “filmmakers” Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer) the prospects for Scary Movie 5 are even poorer.
Sheen and Lohan will join the likes of Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical), Kevin Hart, Anthony Anderson and Regina Hall who are all rumoured to be on board. Anna Faris on the other hand, after leading all four previous entries, has wisely abandoned ship. Malcolm D. Lee (Undercover Brother) will direct Scary Movie 5, which has yet to land an exact release date.
