If you already had the chance to check out Spider-Man: Far From Home, you’re aware how the latest MCU film heavily plays into the idea of misdirection and confusion. While a lot of other plot twists and turns throughout the franchise have fallen a little flat, the truth about Mysterio’s origins and motives paved the way for a bombastic finale, even if a lot of MCU fans saw some form of deception coming way ahead of the reveal – let’s be honest, Mysterio’s penchant for illusions and trickery are well-established at this point.
Better yet is how the master of deception managed to emerge from beyond the grave during Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s mid-credits scene in order to turn the tables on Peter Parker, outing his true identity while simultaneously turning the world against him, thanks to some doctored footage from the Battle of London.
However, as ComicBook.com reports, there’s always the chance that Mysterio/Quentin Beck actually survived, and has simply tricked the world into thinking he’s dead. During the film’s climactic finale, Spider-Man’s nemesis is accidentally shot by one of his EDITH drones. After finally succumbing to his wounds, Peter uses the AI network gifted to him by Tony Stark to confirm that all of Mysterio’s illusions have been shut down.
The thing is, some are speculating one of Nick Fury’s and Beck’s associates, Dmitri Smerdyakov, is none other than Chameleon, the shape-shifting member of the Sinister Six. This connection draws from their shared names (drawing a parallel to the comic book character). If it rings true, it could mean that Dmitri acted as a body-double for Quentin Beck/Mysterio, per the villain’s so-called “contingency plan.”
We’re not entirely sure if Marvel would go this far to keep a villain alive, but we’d definitely be interested to see Mysterio come back in future films. Frankly, he’s one of the more compelling antagonists in the MCU and we’d hate for his only appearance to be in Spider-Man: Far From Home. We’re not holding our breath, but in the event we catch wind of any important news or announcements, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.
