John Hillcoat’s latest project, the long-gestating crime drama Triple Nine, has added three more high caliber names to its impressive star studded cast. Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael B. Jordan will be joining Academy Award winners Christoph Waltz and Cate Blanchett in the film.
Triple Nine, written by screenwriter Matt Cook, tells the story of a group of corrupt cops that plan a major heist and realize that in order to get away with the crime, they will have to shoot one of their own. Casey Affleck will play the film’s lead, replacing Charlie Hunnam in a role that is being described as a “young upstanding officer who is chosen as the victim.”
Meanwhile, Chiwetel Ejiofor, who’s been making headlines for his widely praised portrayal of a free man who’s sold into slavery in 12 Years A Slave, will play the cop that comes up with the heist. Michael B. Jordan, star of the lauded independent film, Fruitvale Station, will play one of the cops that gets set up.
Personally, I’m really looking forward to this one. John Hillcoat is a talented filmmaker that is known for getting powerful performances out of his cast. Though his last feature Lawless wasn’t too well received, it did feature some terrific acting from its stars. Similarly, the film he made before that, The Road, was critically acclaimed for what many thought was the best performance of Viggo Mortensen’s career.
Hillcoat’s cast for Triple Nine is shaping up to be his most impressive one to date and though the film has been a long time in the making, the group of actors that’s been assembled here will certainly make it worth the wait.
