Another remake of a classic movie is going to roll out in March 2013 and judging from the first image, it’s going to be pretty close to the original. Just released today are is the first image from Carrie, starring Chloe Grace Moretz as the titular telekinetic high school girl and Julianne Moore as her abusive mother.
I’ll confess that I’m no fan of the novel upon which the original Carrie movie was based. The film, however, which starred Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, was actually very scary and captured the horrors of high school pretty well.
Kimberly Pierce is the director of the remake, which is an interesting choice. Her most well-known film to date is Boys Don’t Cry, which is basically about a transgender person trying to fit into a new group of people. With that in mind, Pierce should be able to capture Carrie’s isolation and rage in a believable and authentic manner.
What also has me excited about this film is its star. Moretz as Carrie is a wonderful bit of casting. She is small and vulnerable-looking, which means that seeing her as a girl who is constantly bullied and misunderstood is totally plausible.
Despite the influx of pointless remakes, this one looks like it might actually be of some merit. Hopefully it will live up to the original and provide a strong horror film, as that’s something that we just don’t see enough of these days.
