Tom Hanks’ Pirate Thriller Captain Phillips Gets Two New Posters

One of the buzziest Oscar contenders hitting screens this fall is certainly Captain Phillips, the true story of an American cargo ship captain taken captive after his ship is hijacked by Somali pirates. The movie's first trailer paints the film as a blend of tense drama and thrilling action, which could be a winning recipe for awards circuit success, especially if star Tom Hanks is as good in the titular role as we've been led to believe.

One of the buzziest Oscar contenders hitting screens this fall is certainly Captain Phillips, the true story of an American cargo ship captain taken captive after his ship is hijacked by Somali pirates. The movie’s first trailer paints the film as a blend of tense drama and thrilling action, which could be a winning recipe for awards circuit success, especially if star Tom Hanks is as good in the titular role as we’ve been led to believe.

Now, in addition to a trailer, we have two exciting posters for Captain Phillips, courtesy of the film’s Facebook page. Check them out below. The domestic poster shows two pirates scaling the side of Phillips’ ship, the MV Maersk Alabama, while the international poster finds Hanks in the clutches of two armed pirates, putting on a brave face despite his dire situation. Which one do you prefer?

The film is directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Identity). The screenplay, adapted from Phillips’ memoir A Captain’s Story: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs and Dangerous Days at Sea, was penned by State of Play writer Billy Ray. Captain Phillips opens October 11.

Was Tom Hanks the right casting choice for such a dramatic role? And will Paul Greengrass’s furious shaky-cam style add to or detract from Captain Phillips‘ thrilling story? Let us know in the comments section.
