Now that Avengers: Infinity War is out, the next big movie coming from the MCU (no offense, Ant-Man and the Wasp!) is March’s Captain Marvel. Apart from being the long-awaited first female-led solo flick in the franchise, the debut of Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers looks to be exploring new areas of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with many returning characters and a major new alien race set to feature.
According to a report from Screen Geek, however, Captain Marvel won’t just be another fun superhero movie, but will be just as big a game-changer as Infinity War was. Considering the humongous revelations and developments of that film, it sounds unlikely that Marvel will be able to match it, but that’s what we’re hearing from “a trustworthy source” who gave a fascinating quote to the outlet.
“Though Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War were all different and original movies, nothing is going to be as different and original as Captain Marvel. The upcoming movie from Anna Bolden and Ryan Fleck is going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe and give us something no one has seen before – and something that no fan is expecting.
Wonder Woman was obviously considered a very important movie for women, but Captain Marvel is going to blow it away. It’s going to completely redefine superhero movies – similar to how Marvel Studios changed everything back in 2008. If you thought Infinity War was a game-changer, you’re not ready for what’s coming in Captain Marvel.”
This is very big talk, and a lot of it could be hype. The source does seem keen to get one up on DC, for example, after they beat Marvel to the punch on the whole female-led superhero movie thing. However, if we take what’s being said at face value, maybe we should raise our expectations for Captain Marvel even higher. Judging by this description, it sounds like the film is going to launch a new storyline for the MCU….before the current one finishes in Avengers 4.
Thanks to a recent rumor, we might even know what this source could be talking about. We reported earlier today that the Skrulls are apparently set to appear in Avengers 4, after making their debut in Captain Marvel. Put together, these movies will sow the seeds for an adaptation of the Secret Invasion comic book arc. Could that be the game-changer that’s being discussed here? Let us know what you think in the usual place.
