Filming for the hotly anticipated Captain Marvel is entering its final stretch according to a statement on Instagram from Ryan Fleck. The co-director of the upcoming Marvel movie posted an image of one of the production’s fancy crew hats with the caption: “That’s a wrap on #captainmarvelca! Off to Louisiana for final 2 weeks. So close….”
The end may seem close for Fleck, but for many of us, it’s still going to feel like a long wait until this one finally drops. There’s a fair bit riding on Carol Danvers’ big screen debut, not least for the bridge it will provide between the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War and the character’s appearance in next May’s sequel.
Star Brie Larson recently admitted to being hesitant about taking on the role due the strain it could put on her personal life, and it’s likely that the superheroine’s leading role in Marvel’s Phase 4 isn’t doing much to ease the pressure. On top of that, the feature will be noteworthy as the first female solo movie in the MCU, as well as the first to be co-directed by a woman: Fleck’s regular collaborator Anna Boden.
Needless to say, there’ll be a lot of people crossing their fingers that the studio does this project justice. Of course, before we go full blast with the Captain Marvel hype, we’ve still got to sit through Ant Man and the Wasp, which arrives in the United States on July 6th amidst strong early buzz.
Incidentally, the Louisiana location for Captain Marvel has added fuel to the rumors that Monica Rambeau – a New Orleans resident who herself served as the captain for a period in the comics – will feature in the movie, with the current talk being that she’ll be played by Lashana Lynch. If we don’t find out sooner, expect this and other questions to be answered when the film hits cinemas on March 8th, 2019.
