Agent Coulson’s next assignment? We’ll give you a clue: it involves shape-shifting aliens and a certain Carol Danvers…
Yes, Clark Gregg is coming back to the MCU for Captain Marvel, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s 2019 spinoff that has officially entered production in Los Angeles. The good news doesn’t stop there, either, as the Powers That Be have also carved out room for Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace, the duo best known for their villainous turns in James Gunn’s original Guardians of the Galaxy.
And just like that, Captain Marvel has rounded out its ensemble with Agent Coulson, Ronan the Accuser, and Korath, the gun-toting Kree agent with a particular grudge against Chris Pratt’s Star-Prince Star-Lord. Further details on their respective roles weren’t disclosed, though we now know Captain Marvel will be rooted in the 1990s, with the official synopsis teasing a full-blown war between two alien races: the Kree and the Skrulls.
The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A veteran of Marvel’s ongoing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series, Coulson was the connective tissue that bound Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together – and, by effect, the ‘sacrificial lamb’ whose death galvanized them in The Avengers – so news that Clark Gregg’s agent is headed back to the MCU is a joy, quite frankly. Ditto for Lee Pace, whose Ronan the Accuser brought a sense of gravitas and villainy to Guardians of the Galaxy. And under the shadow of Thanos, no less.
So, there you have it; as of March 26th, Captain Marvel is officially lensing across parts of Los Angeles ahead of its expected release on March 8th of next year. And no, Brie Larson’s “sassy, smartass” heroine won’t be staging her debut during Avengers: Infinity War as rumored.
