By now, many of us have seen X-Men: Apocalypse and have likely had a discussion or several regarding which mutant stole the show. Personally, I don’t have a clear favorite, at least as of now. That may change with repeat viewings though as I gain more perspective.
What I can’t deny, however, is that Hugh Jackman’s cameo as a Pre-Wolverine, Weapon X, was certainly memorable. It made me recall the classic X-Men comics I read as a boy and I certainly smiled when I saw him appear onscreen, headgear and all.
As a crazed Logan unleashed his berserker rage and dropped a lot of bodies in the process, you may not have noticed that director Bryan Singer was among the casualties. He recently spoke with The Empire Film Podcast and reflected on that very scene.
Here’s a transcription of the relevant quote, courtesy of Comic Book Movie:
“I have a little cameo, I’m the guy with the machine gun..screaming. When I look at it, I couldn’t recognize myself so I knew no one else could. But it was cool to get killed by Wolverine. It’s now one of the many things I can put on my resume. When went back later to film the Wolverine segment because Hugh was training for the next Wolverine sequel and we wanted him in a certain kind of shape. At first, Hugh was reticent to do it, but once I explained it to him, what the scene is and why it’s there, he agreed to do it over the phone, which is unusual. Usually there’s a bit of negotiation involved, but he said ‘You can call my Agent, but I’m in, I love it.'”
X-Men: Apocalypse is now playing in theaters. For more on Singer’s cameo, you can find the podcast mentioned embedded below.
