Whenever Pixar announced sequels like Cars 2, Monsters University and the upcoming Finding Dory, the constant refrain from fans was, “But what about The Incredibles 2?” Last month, director Brad Bird sent the Internet into a mild tizzy by announcing that he was, indeed, starting to write the sequel to the 2004 Oscar-winning superhero pic. Now, on the eve of releasing his Disney blockbuster Tomorrowland, Bird has confirmed that The Incredibles 2 will be his next movie.

“Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah,” said Bird when asked by Collider whether he would be revisiting the Incredibles for his next project. The director has certainly been hard at work hatching the story for the follow-up, making sure that The Incredibles 2 does right by the original:

Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.

Fans have long been calling for another trip to the action-packed, heartfelt world of the Incredibles, a family of superheroes juggling everyday existence with their innate duty to save the world. The end of the last film saw a villain called the Underminer present himself as another threat to humankind, but though it’s been confirmed that Frozone is also in the mix for the follow-up, concrete details on where the pic will take its characters are likely a ways off.

Regardless, with Bird working on The Incredibles 2, it’s not too presumptuous to expect big things from the sequel. The first Incredibles stands as one of the finest animated films of this century, as well as one of the best superhero movies ever made. And given the recent superhero boom, Bird has his work cut out for him showing Marvel and DC how it’s done.
