Given how important weaponized nostalgia has become to Hollywood’s decision makers when it comes to enticing audiences of a certain generation to part with their hard-earned cash, it would be smart to assume that Warner Bros. have at the very least approached Michael Jordan about making a cameo appearance in Space Jam: A New Legacy.
After all, the world ‘legacy’ is right there in the title, and it makes total sense for His Airness to drop by and endorse both the sequel to the 1996 original and his on-court successor as the NBA’s most marketable asset. It would hardly be a question of money either, seeing as Jordan’s estimated net worth soared past $2 billion last year, but as of yet there aren’t any guarantees that he’s been locked in.
That being said, Don Cheadle did say we were getting a Michael Jordan cameo, just not in the way we were expecting. The actor’s vague and mysterious tidbit was followed up by talk that Michael B. Jordan will end up in A New Legacy instead, as part of a gag where the Looney Tunes are sent out to gather their old teammate, only to return with the wrong Jordan.
As hilarious as that may well turn out to be, we’re now hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us The Mask would cameo in the movie long before it was confirmed in leaked footage – that both of the famous MJs will cameo in Space Jam: A New Legacy. Last we heard, the two hadn’t even met each other properly yet, and that might still be the case depending on what stage of the narrative each Michael Jordan appears when the film hits theaters and HBO Max on Friday.
