Black Widow being the first movie of the MCU’s Phase 4 makes for an interesting proposition. The world saw Natasha Romanoff sacrifice her life to allow Hawkeye to retrieve the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame and now that we know the character’s fate, why should audiences turn up to see her solo adventure? Well, those in attendance at Disney’s D23 expo found out why, as they were the first audience for the trailer’s premiere.
The preview itself hasn’t been released online, so the only thing we have to go on right now are their descriptions and the movie’s official poster. But at least they give us an idea of what’s in store for the character’s final big-screen outing (unless Marvel can squeeze in another adventure before her death).
Apparently, the trailer begins with a quick recap of Nat’s appearances across the MCU, before moving to Budapest. This is a key location for the character, with the Budapest mission being mentioned in dialogue between Black Widow and Hawkeye in previous MCU films (and by Nick Fury in Captain Marvel). This leads straight into an action sequence in which it appears that multiple Black Widows are assaulting an apartment complex, which may indicate that the other people in the program that created Natasha are out for revenge. Included in this sequence is also a look at a new character played by Rachel Weisz, confirmed to be named Melina.
Following this are snatches of action sequences, in which we see Nat fighting in a forest, battling Taskmaster and in her new outfit. The trailer then concludes with a joke: both Natasha and Yelena flip into the same ‘superhero pose,’ with Yelena accusing Natasha of being a “total poser.”
Honestly, this all sounds pretty damn fantastic. Let’s hope that there was someone in the crowd craftily recording with their mobile phone so we can get a look at Black Widow for ourselves.
