Sherlock fans will know him as Dr. John Watson, but to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Martin Freeman will always be Everett Ross, the elusive CIA agent who’s already got two appearances under his belt thanks to the back-to-back releases of Captain America: Civil War and Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther.
The latter has already earned its place among the box office greats – in fact, Black Panther‘s $1.3 billion tally was enough to bring it within arm’s reach of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. So it should come as no surprise that Marvel Studios is already mulling over plans for a bona fide sequel, even if they’re willing to pump the brakes on T’Challa’s next solo movie until such time as Ryan Coogler is ready to pick up the megaphone once more.
One member of the ensemble cast who is all but certain to return is Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross, after the actor spoke to The Daily Beast about Sherlock, Watson and his future plans with Marvel Studios.
As far as I know, I do have more Marvel plans. I suppose I can’t really be too specific, because I don’t actually know what they are. But yes, the plan always certainly was that I do have some more Marvel work to do. Unless they change their mind, that’s the idea.
Unsurprisingly, Freeman wasn’t at liberty to divulge too much, too soon, as the Powers That Be over at Marvel are likely sussing out individual schedules and whatnot before they commit to Everett Ross’ next MCU appearance.
Last we checked in on Freeman’s reluctant hero, he helped save Wakanda from the clutches of Killmonger, so it’s a safe bet that Ryan Coogler and his writing team will earmark a pretty substantial role for Everett Ross once development on Black Panther 2 begins in earnest.
