It’s going on three years since Dwayne Johnson officially climbed aboard the DC Extended Universe, and there’s still no sign of a release date for his Black Adam spinoff.
Originally scheduled to appear in David Sandberg’s forthcoming Shazam! movie, before the Powers That Be decided otherwise, Johnson has been quietly waiting in the wings for his DC debut. And at least based on the actor’s latest Instagram post, The Rock may have lined up a potential director for Black Adam. Before we get into things, it’s worth mentioning that the actor holds a fair amount of influence over at Warner Bros., and has seemingly struck up a close working relationship with DC mogul Geoff Johns since signing on.
With that in mind, and with It Part 1 – The Losers Club teetering on the verge of release, Dwayne Johnson has now taken to Instagram to congratulate everyone involved, most notably Andy Muschietti.
And most of all congrats to director, Andy Muschietti for making such a defining film. You knocked it outta the f*cking park! Great talking with you man and we’re gonna have some fun working together down the road. As a huge fan of the horror genre, this one’s special.
It’s admittedly a reach, and though he doesn’t mention Black Adam specifically, we can’t imagine Warner Bros. brass would be too happy about Dwyane Johnson announcing the film’s director via Instagram. Nevertheless, file this one firmly in the rumor cabinet for now, as there’s no real concrete evidence to go on beyond this social media post.
Shazam has been tentatively set for release in 2019, with Black Adam expected to follow shortly thereafter. Next to tumble off Warner’s production line is Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon’s Justice League on November 17th. It, on the other hand, will begin to haunt theaters from tomorrow, September 8th, and a sequel has finally been locked in for a potential release in 2019.
