First Look At Jurnee Smollett-Bell As Black Canary In Birds Of Prey Revealed

One thing in particular that's got me looking forward to the Birds of Prey movie is how it'll bring a variety of DC characters to the silver screen for the first time. Sure, the Cathy Yan-directed flick does feature the highly anticipated return of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, but she'll also bring Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) along for the ride. And if that weren't enough, Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) will serve as the villain of the piece.

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest happenings pertaining to the upcoming blockbuster, then you’re aware of how various goodies have found their way online today in order to celebrate the start of production. To briefly reiterate, Margot Robbie herself revealed Harley’s new costume on Instagram, and then a stylish teaser trailer dropped soon afterward.

Not to sound negative, but if there were any downside to the teaser, it’d be that footage showing off anyone other than the Clown Princess of Crime had a real “blink and you’ll miss it” quality. Heck, I had a hard time making anything out when using the pause feature.

Fortunately, we have a screenshot of Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary to present to you. Seen below, the femme fatale can be spotted while singing her heart out into a golden microphone.

If we’re to extrapolate anything from this, it’s that this big screen take on the character will draw some inspiration from the comics published during the short-lived DC You era from a few years back. In those, Black Canary was part of an eponymous rock band and, believe it or not, DC even released a soundtrack online.

When it comes to Jurnee’s look, it appears as though her hair color was lightened for the part, rather than having her don a wig as the heroine sometimes does. Additionally, her glove hints at the iconic fishnets that normally spring to mind whenever Black Canary is mentioned, so let’s hope that element is retained.

As always, it’s recommended that you keep watching this space, as much more is sure to be revealed before Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) opens in theaters on February 7th, 2020.
