Though it initially dropped on Netflix before the festive season, the mystery and intrigue surrounding Susanne Bier’s Bird Box have spilled over into the new year – so much so, in fact, that the director’s been busy fielding all sorts of questions relating to Sandra Bullock’s performance, the potential of a sequel, and those pesky monsters lurking in the dark.
Yes, it’s pretty clear by this point that Netflix’s post-apocalyptic thriller has taken subscribers by storm ever since hitting the streaming service in December, with its gripping story of survival inspiring all sorts of discussion and debate amongst fans. And though we’ve already heard some rather impressive viewing numbers for the film, the company has now revealed even more.
According to Netflix, 80 million households have watched the movie in its first four weeks of release. That’s a staggering figure, and one that will no doubt please the company as they brace themselves for the competition that Disney’s upcoming streaming platform will bring about when it comes to market later this year.
Admittedly, it’s hard to know just how impressive 80 million is as Netflix rarely reveals viewing figures for their movies and TV shows, so we don’t have much to compare it to. However, we do know that as of Q3 2018, the platform had about 137 million subscribers, which means that well over half of their viewers watched the film. And that is, indeed, an impressive stat.
Bird Box is still streaming via Netflix, so if you can find the courage, a gripping, horror-infused treat awaits. Either that, or you could also try your luck with the so-called Bird Box challenge – just make sure you take the necessary precautions…
