Netflix is responsible for a lot of buzz in the entertainment industry right now thanks to two titles that subscribers simply can’t stop talking about.
The first is Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, an innovative experience that takes the form of a Choose Your Own Adventure story, allowing the viewer to control the plot and its central character. It’s a dark, twisted tale that has a few unexpected surprises and turns, and folks are enjoying going through it over and over to try and unlock all the different endings and paths.
Then there’s Bird Box, Susanne Bier’s adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel that tells a post-apocalyptic story of a woman fighting to survive “after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide.” Gripping, thrilling and boasting some fantastic performances, it’s a great watch, but one that also leaves you with many questions.
First and foremost, of course, is just what is this “unseen presence” plaguing the characters, and why and how did it come to Earth? But beyond that, there are a few other things that aren’t ever cleared up or explained, such as where did Felix and Lucy take the car when they stole it from the house?
That very question was put to Bier in a recent interview, and though she wouldn’t confirm their fate, she did say the following:
“I think [the grocery store] was their plan, but we don’t know! I think that that’s where they wanna go, but I actually think it’s quite exciting that we don’t know exactly where they went.”
If you read between the lines here, it sounds like the director may be keeping things a bit open-ended for a potential sequel. Or maybe even a Felix and Lucy spinoff. In any case, whatever follow-up ends up materializing, it sounds like it’ll be a while before we see it, as Bier wants viewers to remain focused on enjoying Bird Box for the time being.
“We only just finished it! It’s funny, I’m kind of reading people asking for a sequel and I’m like, ‘Hey, hey, hey, we really just finished!’ So let’s just enjoy it for now,” said the director.
Fair enough, but with the amount of buzz and positive reception that Bird Box is receiving, we’d be pretty surprised if Netflix doesn’t announce some kind of sequel or spinoff later this year.
