Weapon-Wielding Bilbo Takes Centre Stage On The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies’ Latest Poster

There's nothing that defines the winter season moreso than the arrival of a new chapter in an existing franchise. It's during the coldest, darkest months of the year that audiences are less inclined to venture outside and remain indoors. You might prefer the warmth of a fire, perhaps? Or failing that the imposing body heat of two hundred strangers with whom you're packed in a cinema? Well, what better movie to kick off the winter multiplex season than yet another Tolkien epic. In case you'd not heard, there's more Hobbit action to come with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.

As expected, the marketing campaign for Peter Jackson’s closing chapter in The Hobbit trilogy is nothing short of breathtaking. I’m not a big Middle Earth fan, but I can’t help but to feel captivated and a little enchanted by the breadth and scope of the world Jackson has brought to life. Granted, I thought the first Hobbit outing would’ve been more palatable had its first hour been “lost to an accident in the editing suite,” but after that, the pace picked up nicely.

This latest poster places all of its hopes on its tagline. Declaring the film to be “the defining chapter” in the trilogy, it features the central image of a battered and grubby Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman). Pointing a sword forward, his eyes full of fear/courage/some other equally heroic noun, it’s a standard one-sheet that doesn’t venture into any new artistic territory. You can check it out below.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will arrive in UK cinemas on December 12th before landing in North America on December 17th.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.
