Update: Continuing to peel back the layers of Doctor Strange, EW has rolled out a series of concept art for Marvel’s standalone flick, showcasing more of the Quantum Realm and how Stephen Strange became the titular sorcerer.

Original Story: Entertainment Weekly has conjured up the first official image for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, revealing Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role as the studio’s very own mad scientist.

Since entering production in early November, Scott Derrickson’s live-action standalone has been quietly marching forward in development, with set photos emerging that depicted early versions of Sanctum Sanctorum, the fabled Eye of Agamotto and much more.

Fast forward to today and we have our first official peek at the “menacing, incredible” Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme. In tandem with the reveal, EW quizzed the Sherlock star about the minutia of the role, and the experimental nature of the film itself.

“I’m still in the infancy of learning all that,” Cumberbatch tells EW. “It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”

Building upon the supernatural elements introduced during this year’s Ant-Man, Doctor Strange is expected to venture further into the Quantic Realm than any Marvel film before it. As such, expect visual effects aplenty, with Cumberbatch adding that “there’s going to be crazy s— going on.” Both Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man proved to be risks worth taking, will we be saying the same about Derrickson’s feature in a year’s time?

Toplining the feature is Benedict Cumberbatch, with a cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Scott Adkins, Amy Landecker, and Mads Mikkelsen in an undisclosed role.

Benedict Cumberbatch will step into the title role when Marvel’s Doctor Strange whizzes into theaters on November 4, 2016.
