Before Benedict Cumberbatch is confirmed for a role in Marvel’s cinematic universe as Doctor Strange, you can catch him on the big screen next month doing what he does best – method. Nabbing the lead role in Morten Tlydum’s true story of esteemed mathematician Alan Turing, Cumberbatch is bringing his A game to British drama, The Imitation Game.
The story of Turing, the man chiefly responsible for cracking the German enigma code, is one that stirs up great intrigue because of his own private dilemmas. A decorated war hero (posthumously at least), Turing’s private life interfered with the public’s perception of him and his ability to do his job. Doing justice to the socially awkward genius, Cumberbatch’s take on the man is one of the film’s biggest sells, as evidenced by this latest clip which has arrived.
Running at just under a minute, it shows Turing being interviewed for the position at Bletchley Park by Commander Denniston (Charles Dance.) It’s a juicy clip showcasing what could indeed be a Oscar-winning turn from the future Doctor Strange.
The Imitation Game opens in cinemas on November 14th in the UK, and November 21st in the US.
During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.
