Despite receiving quite a beating from critics, Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice had no trouble pulling in some very impressive numbers at the box office this weekend. After a strong start on Thursday night, the film finished its opening weekend with $170.1 million domestically and $424 million worldwide.
Those numbers make it the best March opening ever and the sixth biggest domestic opening of all-time. Dawn of Justice also beat out The Dark Knight Rises and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which is both surprising and impressive. Audiences seem to be responding well to the film, too, as it’s received a B CinemaScore grade and the buzz online is fairly positive. At least from what we’ve been seeing.
So, it looks like Warner Bros.’ massive gamble paid off in the end. The critics may not be too pleased with what Snyder and co. put together, but at the end of the day, box office receipts speak louder than reviews and it seems that the general public is embracing the start of the DCEU with open arms.
