Even though Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has a director in place – but maybe not a writer based on the recent speculation swirling around Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s Jeff Loveness – Secret Wars has yet to fill the most notable vacancy behind the camera, even though it releases only one year later.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ Destin Daniel Cretton will be wielding the megaphone on the next assemblage of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but who’s going to follow in his footsteps? Virtually every high-profile talent in Hollywood has been linked with the job at one stage or another, with the hypothetical candidates ranging from Jon Favreau bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe full circle to Everything Everywhere All at Once duo Daniels diving back into the multiverse once again.
However, a remarkably consistent, widely-acclaimed, and experienced Marvel director has been thrown up as one of the latest contenders, and a lot of people aren’t having it. Even though he single-handedly elevated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness above mediocrity with his signature stylistic flourishes, not many seem keen on Sam Raimi being reunited with scribe Michael Waldron for Secret Wars.
That’s not to say Raimi would end up dropping the ball, but the overriding sentiment is that Secret Wars should be helmed by someone with an in-depth, extensive, and exhaustive knowledge and appreciation of what the MCU is, where it’s been, and where it’s all supposed to go. That does narrow the field significantly, though, but we surely can’t be too far away from getting an answer.
