The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War finally arrived earlier today, and it came packed with moments that fans will be talking about for months to come. One of the most intriguing scenes in the teaser though involved Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and seemed to cast a new light on his actions in Thor: Ragnarok.
In the recent threequel movie, the God of Mischief looked to have found his inner good guy as he stood by his brother throughout the fight against Hela. In a touching moment of brotherly bonding, he even remained by the new king of Asgard’s side once the threat had been dealt with.
However, there was one hint that Loki still had a hidden agenda throughout the movie. When he was in Odin’s vault to awaken Surtur, he was shown to notice the Tesseract, on display and unguarded. Seeing as he was desperate to get his hands on it back in The Avengers, the trickster god naturally looked more than a little tempted to pinch it.
Well, the Avengers: Infinity War trailer confirms that’s exactly what he did, as one shot features him in possession of the cosmic cube. What’s more, it looks like he isn’t working alone, either. All signs point to him having reformed his old alliance with the big man himself, Thanos.
In the scene in question, we see Loki strolling through a swathe of corpses. Going by his spaceship surroundings and the fashion sense of the dead, it appears that this is the wreckage of the Asgardian refugee ship. Thor: Ragnarok‘s post-credits scene saw Thanos’ ship looming over the vessel, so this presumably follows on directly from that.
At the end of the scene, Loki is shown to offer the Tesseract AKA the Space Infinity Stone to someone else, someone a lot taller. It doesn’t take Tony Stark to work out that this is likely the Mad Titan. Whether Loki is the one to call Thanos to the refugee ship or if he’s just decided to cut his losses and ally with Thanos now that he’s here, we don’t know. Either way, it looks like Loki is back on the bad side for Infinity War. And seeing as he’s actually succeeded in aiding Thanos this time, this is arguably the worst thing he’s ever done.
Avengers: Infinity War lands in theaters on May 4th, 2018.
