Ever since they went on sale last month – March 16th, to be specific – Avengers: Infinity War has completely obliterated AMC ticket records. And we do mean obliterate.
Everyone knew that this movie was going to be big, there was never any doubt about that. It is, after all, the culmination of 10 years of one of the most beloved franchises to ever grace the silver screen. But what we’re hearing today is truly impressive, as ComicBook.com tells us that Infinity War is currently selling more tickets than the last seven Marvel movies combined. Yes, if ever there was proof that this film is in a league of its own when it comes to pre-release buzz and excitement, this is it.
For those who need a refresher, the last seven pics to come from Marvel Studios are as follows:
- Black Panther
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Spider-Man: Homecoming
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
- Doctor Strange
- Captain America: Civil War
- Ant-Man
Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Infinity War is going to gross more than all seven of those movies at the box office when all is said and done, but let’s face it, it probably will. At this point, there’s no way it falls under $1 billion worldwide and could even topple The Avengers‘ mighty $1.5 billion haul.
Current tracking puts it at an eye-watering $225 million domestic opening, which would place it on route to a domestic finish close to $600 million. Add in those international sales, and it’s looking like Joe and Anthony Russo’s event movie will find its place amongst the very highest earners in cinema history like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Avatar.
Of course, one thing working in Infinity War’s favor is that it’s such a big film that it’s scared off most of its competition, with three clear weeks before the release of Deadpool 2 on May 18th (its R rating also means that it’s not in direct competition with Avengers 3 for family audiences). That should ensure the pic has tons of time to rake in some serious dough and we imagine it’ll remain in the number one spot on the box office charts for some time.
Expect Avengers: Infinity War to make history – and well over $1 billion – on April 27th.
