Upon opening to an unprecedented $250 million-plus domestically, and subsequently becoming the fastest film to reach the $1 billion plateau, Thanos shifted his conquering gaze to the last major market Avengers: Infinity War had yet to open in, China.
By Friday night in the Middle Kingdom, the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed blockbuster had earned $66 million upon its first full day of release, a 96% share of all cinema revenues in China that day. Combined with the $9.3 million grossed during Thursday previews, and Infinity War now has an estimated opening total of close to $76 million in that region.
Stateside, the pic continues to mow down kin at the box office, having nonchalantly passed Age of Ultron in just 11 days of release, which followed the outstripping of six additional MCU staples. On the global scale, next to fall victim to Thanos and the Black Order was Iron Man 3, with IW having skittered past the $1.22 billion earned by the Shane Black-directed picture with its $1.23 billion, at the time.
As it stands, Infinity War has now earned $486 million domestically and $789 million in foreign markets, making for an exceptional $1.275 billion total worldwide through just two weeks of release. And with all the buzz and hype still surrounding it, it would seem that the pic has long legs, meaning it should continue raking it in over the next little while.
Not only that, but the third Avengers installment is also now the fourth highest-grossing superhero pic ever released, too, trailing only Black Panther ($1.34B), Age of Ultron ($1.41B) and The Avengers ($1.52B). With the sky seemingly the limit for the Russo’s event movie, the only question now, is, can Avengers: Infinity War hit $2 billion? We’re thinking yes, but we should know more once the weekend is out, so be sure to stay tuned!
