Avengers: Infinity War did a tremendous job of tying together all the prior hints to Thanos and the Infinity Stones storyline, but some things weren’t quite explained in a satisfying manner. For instance, the Mad Titan is said to have had the dwarves of Nidavellir make the Infinity Gauntlet for him. However, we’ve seen Odin’s fake Gauntlet in both Thor and Ragnarok, which means there must’ve been an original at some point.
It’s been suggested by one fan theory that this Gauntlet was an ancient Asgardian creation, which seems to make a lot of sense. But if that’s so, how did Thanos know of the device? Well, Reddit user @ZeekOwl91 has built on that previous theory to come up with a compelling argument for where the Mad Titan got the idea for his Gauntlet from, saying that he received visions of it from the Mind Stone, which he had in his possession before the events of The Avengers.
Here’s how the fan’s theory goes:
How did Thanos come up with it or where did he get the information on how to create it and wield the Infinity stones?
If you’ll think back to the first Avengers film, the scene where Loki speaks to The Other, he tells Loki that Thanos showed him ancient knowledge and put the scepter in his hand. After viewing the later MCU films, we can guess that Thanos got this knowledge from the Mind Stone, which is in the scepter, and that the scepter was probably his creation to pervert the powers of the Mind stone(which in turn was what made Ultron the defective AI that he was).
I’d also like to point out the scene in Age of Ultron, when Bruce and Tony were discussing the behavior of the Stone within the scepter, that it looked “like it’s thinking… and these are like neurons firing.” So if the Mind stone is thinking, it isn’t too much of a stretch to assume that it could also have memories. But memories of what exactly…
Memories of the Original Infinity Gauntlet.
And so, this was the instrument that Thanos saw which he would use to make his vision a reality!
Returning to the concept of the Gauntlet Numero Uno, the Redditor suggests a bold twist: that the Infinity Stones were used by the first king of Asgard to create their paradise of a home planet and to imbue his bloodline with enhanced abilities, hence the godlike powers of Odin and his brood. After this act was done, the king then scattered the gems, including entrusting the Time Stone to Agamotto (linking in with Doctor Strange).
Well, I think the original Gauntlet was created by Thor’s ancestor, the first King of the Asgardians. If you’ll think back to the scene in Thor: Ragnarok, where Hela takes Skurge down into Odin’s treasure vault, she knocks over a Fake Gauntlet. It’s obviously a fake one, and I think it may have been a goal, one of Odin’s pursuits during his conquests with Hela, looking for the other Infinity stones(since he’d already known that two/three were on Midgard/Earth), to make a Gauntlet like his ancestor had done millennia ago. But for what purpose, I don’t know.
And then I wondered what made the Asgardians so powerful, especially Odin and his family: What was so special about them? And this thought also pointed at their ancestor creating the Gauntlet.
I think the first King designed and created the Infinity Gauntlet in order to wield the Infinity stones, and with it he created Asgard(plus the BiFrost) and filled it with the powers of the stones but bound this power to his bloodline, which is what made Odin and his family so powerful. And I believe the stones showed him that they should not tamper with natural law, but defend it, so he must have made it his duty, the duty of his family and of Asgard, to watch over the rest of the universe(he may have used the Gauntlet to fight of a powerful threat as well, which Thanos’ actions may have undone). From there, he destroyed the Gauntlet and sent the Infinity stones to different parts of the universe. He might have been the one who gave Agamotto the Time stone and made him the first Sorcerer Supreme(and Agamotto in turn, taught his followers not to tamper with natural law).
This is another well thought-out theory from the same fan that brought us the argument that the Mind Stone has secretly been on the side of the Avengers all along, during the invasion of the Chitauri and Ultron’s attack and now through Vision, arguably as an avatar of the Mind Stone’s consciousness.
If that’s true, then the remaining heroes might need its help again after the devastating climax of Avengers: Infinity War. What’s more, perhaps this mooted original Infinity Gauntlet could make an appearance in Avengers 4 and give Iron Man and co. a much-needed weapon against Thanos? Time will tell, but you can color us intrigued.
