Three weeks after its record opening, Avengers: Infinity War has truly secured its place among box office royalty.
Online analyst Box Office Mojo has crunched the numbers to reveal that at $547M, Infinity War is the eighth highest-grossing movie ever to grace the domestic box office, putting it somewhere between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight on the official standings.
The sequel’s meteoric rise also spells bad news for Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, which has slipped to 11th on the all-time domestic chart. Nevertheless, Infinity War‘s $61.8M weekend haul – a third weekend haul that’s bigger than some blockbusters earn during their first – pushes its North American total all the way to $547M.
Granted, Joe and Anthony Russo’s Herculean epic still has a long, long way to go if it’s to ever catch the likes of Avatar ($760M) and The Force Awakens ($936M), though Marvel brass can still take solace in the fact that Infinity War has turned a profit. And quite a big one at that.
One thing we can tell you with absolute certainty is that Avengers: Infinity War is still pacing ahead of Black Panther ($501M in 17 days), indicating that the MCU’s newest addition has a good chance of becoming Marvel’s biggest ever release in North America.
For the record, Black Panther‘s domestic total currently stands at an eye-watering $696M, so breaking $700M would still be a phenomenal achievement for Infinity War.
