We’re almost there, folks. Avengers: Infinity War continues to perform well at the box office and it’s now almost guaranteed to reach the $2 billion milestone. The event movie has blown past all sorts of box office records on its journey to becoming the fourth highest-grossing pic, well, ever, and may even top Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.068 billion) when all is said and done.
That’s thanks to the film earning an additional $10.3 million on home turf this weekend and $24 million across the pond, bringing its total to $1.96 billion. That includes a whopping $356.2 million in China alone, where it’s absolutely killing it. As Forbes points out, Infinity War is now “the third-biggest overseas grosser (behind only Titanic and Avatar), the sixth-biggest domestic grosser and the fourth-biggest global earner (behind Force Awakens, Titanic and Avatar).”
Taking all this into account, next weekend – barring any unforeseen disasters – it’s expected to cross $2 billion at the worldwide box office, even while facing tough competition from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. However, it is interesting to note that its domestic total only sits at $642.8 million, which means it won’t beat Black Panther ($699 million) on home turf, which is pretty crazy to think about.
Still, take nothing away from Avengers: Infinity War, as it’s had a wildly impressive theatrical run so far and it’ll still be in theaters for a while longer. There’s also the fact that its home video release is now on the horizon. August 14th is the date that’s being rumored at the moment – with Digital on July 31st – and already, various retailers are starting to reveal their exclusives.
Circling back to those box office numbers, though, and as Avengers: Infinity War continues to inch closer towards $2 billion, we’ll be sure to keep you posted every step of the way.
