When it comes to Marvel Comics, Adam Warlock has a pretty long and storied history with the Infinity Gauntlet. And it turns out the fan-favorite space pirate almost made the cut for Avengers: Infinity War.
Asked if there were any characters that were floated early on in the creative process, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely told Entertainment Tonight that Warlock, a renown anti-hero who was originally teased at the tail-end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, came pretty damn close.
Alas, the creative duo decided against a Warlock cameo, as doing so would have been a disservice to a character who really deserves a standalone movie of his own.
Well, there are some in the original Infinity Gauntlet series that are…Like, we didn’t introduce Adam Warlock, because it’s a massive backbend and you practically have to make an Adam Warlock movie to introduce him. He just can’t walk onscreen. So, there was a brief moment where we were like, Ehhh…, and then we were like– [He points to the movie’s poster.] We have that many characters already! And then there were others we couldn’t use. Like, Silver Surfer would have been useful, but we can’t touch him. Currently.
McFeely added:
I don’t want to spoil anything, because then if I tell you that they’re not in it, you’ll go “Oh, they’re not in it.” But there are certainly a handful of pretty crazy things that we put in for several drafts and took out.
Suffice it to say, Adam Warlock was cut pretty early on, which leads us to believe that he’s being saved until the release of James Gunn’s third Guardians movie in 2020. We will, of course, be keeping a close eye on Warlock as time wears on, so stay tuned.
Avengers: Infinity War, meanwhile, opens big on April 27th. How big, you ask? Try $498 million. And that’s just on its opening weekend…
