Avengers: Endgame Writers Say We May See Steve Rogers Again

Avengers: Endgame wrapped up Steve Rogers' arc on a bittersweet note. After traveling to the past to return the Infinity Stones, it was revealed that Cap had lived out his life as he meant to before he was frozen, enjoying a long marriage to Peggy and was now an old man. He even passed on the mantle of Captain America, complete with his shield, to Sam Wilson. That's about as final an ending as you could have without actually killing him off, right?

You’d think so, but Endgame‘s co-writer Christopher Markus isn’t ruling out the idea that we’ll see Steve again in the future of the MCU. In an in-depth interview with Fandango about the multi-layered plot of the movie, Markus said it was a possibility – though he warned that he doesn’t think Steve got up to much hero-ing in this alternate life of his.

“Possibly. I think maybe all I did was Steve was a stay-at-home dad and Peggy went to work at S.H.I.E.L.D. I don’t know that there were any adventures.”

To begin with, Markus might have just revealed that Steve and Peggy had a child, or children, together. So, even if Chris Evans isn’t coming back to the franchise, we might see Cap’s kids in the MCU instead. However, let’s not get too excited just yet, as “stay-at-home dad” could have been a figure of speech.

On the topic of more Steve, though, Markus’ comments conflict with the reply director Joe Russo gave on the same topic. The filmmaker said that he believed he kept up the good fight even after retiring as Cap and “still helped many others when they were needed.”

By the sounds of it, then, there are no current plans to bring Captain Rogers back at the moment, as the men who made Avengers: Endgame haven’t even worked out all the details of his life yet. It is worth pointing out though that Russo did previously say that Evans isn’t done with Marvel. A deliberate lie to conceal a spoiler, or a hint at future appearances? You decide.
