With Disney’s buyout of Fox now complete, Marvel Studios has the rights back to the X-Men, meaning it’s only a matter of time before we get the uncanny mutants rebooted within the MCU. Understandably, fans are mostly excited for a new version of Wolverine who can finally rub shoulders with Hulk or Spider-Man, but one Avengers: Endgame creative has hopes that the studio will finally do another character justice.
In an interview with Fandango, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were asked which X-Men they’d like to write for. McFeely pointed out that Markus is a big Cyclops fan and the scribe then explained that he’d like to see the field leader of the team be treated with some “respect” on the big screen.
“I’ve always wanted to see Cyclops done with some respect. Feel he’s gotten a raw deal.”
This is a common criticism of the original X-Men movies from fans, with many feeling that – while James Marsden was pretty good casting – Scott Summers’ important role in the group was swamped by the emphasis on Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Tye Sheridan did debut as a young Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse, but despite the lack of Logan, that was still a crowded movie and he didn’t get to do all that much. Fingers crossed for this June’s Dark Phoenix, then.
Marsden himself said recently that he’d welcome a return as the character if that’s what Marvel wanted to do. OG X-Men fans might be up for that, too, but in all likelihood, that sounds like a long-shot. Kevin Feige is playing coy with his plans for the team at the moment, but we’ve basically been told that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is the only character inherited from Fox that Disney/Marvel is planning on keeping as is. The rest are likely to be recast.
Don’t expect to see the X-Men right away in the MCU following Avengers: Endgame, though, as we’ve been told they might not appear for “a very long time” yet.
