Despite having been in theaters for well over a month now, Avengers: Endgame is the type of film that lingers in the zeitgeist. Fans are continuing to line up for multiple viewings, then racing back to the internet to break down every possible frame in a hunt for clues with deeper connections to the MCU.
After all, Endgame‘s a dense film, filled to the brim with fan service and Easter Eggs, so it’s very likely that even its smallest details have much a much deeper history within continuity. For instance, a brand new theory from those over at Screen Rant posits that Thanos’ double-sided broad blade isn’t just an ordinary alien weapon, but an immensely powerful armament of Celestial origin.
Looking at the evidence presented, it’s not a farfetched idea. Thanos was already a behemoth on the battlefield, single-handedly taking on Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and a large chunk of the Guardians of the Galaxy in last year’s Infinity War. Prior to that, he slapped down the Hulk so badly that the big guy wouldn’t return for the rest of the movie, a feat onto itself. So of course, it’s to be expected that such a powerful warrior would only use the best weapons in existence.
This leads us to the Endgame finale, where the Thanos from 2014 appears through a time portal to take on the remaining Avengers ten years later, a mysterious double-sided blade in hand. Confronted by Iron Man, Thor and Captian America, the Mad Titan took his blades to Cap’s unbreakable vibranium shield, easily hacking it into pieces. He then preceded to use the weapon to block strikes from both Stormbreaker and Mjolnir, which were forged by the Dwarves of Nidavellir, who also created the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet. Therefore, it must be believed that these blades were created by even stronger beings.
The site goes on to surmise that the sword has to have been built by the Celestials, the earliest known masters of the Infinity Stones. Briefly depicted in Guardians of the Galaxy, the Celestials are expected to play a major role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Eternals movie. If anyone in the MCU were crazy enough to not only seek out a Celestial weapon but also master it, it would have to be Thanos.
Again, theorizing about the most minuscule facts is all part of the fun of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previously, fans have suggested that the Mad Titan’s evil plan was actually in defense of a Galactus invasion, or that because of Endgame’s time-bending storyline, Star-Lord never met Gamora, leaving Ego free to destroy our world in an alternate dimension.
Avengers: Endgame is expected to hit Blu-ray shelves this fall, providing fans with an even easier method of seeking out Easter Eggs and surmising new theories. Until then though, you can still catch it in theaters, where it’s on the backend of a historic box office run.
