Avengers: Endgame Struggling To Catch Avatar’s Box Office Record

Though Avengers: Endgame has already surpassed James Cameron's Titanic in box office sales, analysts say that passing Avatar will be more of a challenge.

Avengers: Endgame

It’d be ridiculous to call the performance of Avengers: Endgame at the box office anything other than impressive. In four weeks, the finale to Marvel’s Infinity Saga has garnered $2.62 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Again, that’s only after four weeks!

And though Endgame has already surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic for the #2 spot (and we got a great congratulatory tweet from the legendary director), analysts are projecting that getting past his other epic, Avatar, will be much more of a challenge.

It’s no secret that the Marvel film’s grosses have been slowing down significantly with every coming week. But even so, the possibility never seemed to die out completely. Now, however, analysts are saying that the differing economic strategies of the two movies pose a great threat to Endgame‘s chances.

Avatar was all about the marathon and now it’s about the sprint,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore.

When Cameron’s sci-fi adventure made it to the top of the international market, it was after a long, gradual run in the theaters. As it passed the record, it’d been in exhibition for over 60 weeks, and received a late summer re-release almost 6 months after its debut.

Endgame‘s struggles will and have come from an influx in competition. The releases of Legendary’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu and Lionsgate’s John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum have already slowed its momentum down greatly. And now, Disney’s Aladdin remake is coming out, and will quickly be followed by the likes of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Elton John biopic Rocketman.
