When Marvel cast Brie Larson, you have to wonder; did they really know what they were getting themselves into? The Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel actress has been outspoken on topics such as sexism and harassment in Hollywood, to the point that she’s received some heat for some of her comments. And her latest statement on an all-female Avengers movie is sure to raise some temperatures as well.
In an interview she did recently with CNet, Larson fielded a few questions, including would she like to see an Avengers film with nothing but females in it? Just kidding; that totally wasn’t the question. The interviewer asked her which of her fellow MCU actors she’d like to do a “buddy movie” with. You know, like Thor and Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok. Whether or not she avoided answering the actual question on purpose may never be known, but here’s what she said:
I’m still really into this idea of an all-female Avengers movie. Getting all the women together and getting them to work as a team … would be so powerful and iconic. Just because having just seen Avengers: Endgame, getting to see all of those characters on screen, you realize the beauty of these new superhero movies is that everybody has their own special skills they bring to the table. Their own, you know, superpower.
She went on to finish with this, which will remind you of a certain kick-ass scene in Endgame that I won’t spoil for those of you who haven’t seen the movie yet.
And to see women work together, and in that way as a team, is not something we’ve seen enough of on screen.
Don’t get me wrong; it was a good answer, just to a completely different question. Her avoiding discussing the idea that she could be in a buddy movie with one of her old white dude (her words from last year, not mine) co-stars might come to bite her in the butt later, especially in this world full of keyboard warriors.
Seeing how insanely well Captain Marvel did in the box office though, the idea of an all-female Avengers movie is one that the studio might want to pursue. And leading the journey with her blazing mohawk of glory would be Brie Larson, no doubt about it.
