Having hit the big screen nearly two months ago, the hype and excitement surrounding Avengers: Endgame has begun to slow down a bit, but it looks like its due for one big spike in the coming days. As we previously reported, Marvel’s latest blockbuster is returning to theaters with deleted footage, and some reports indicate that the new cut will feature a Hulk post-credits scene and a Stan Lee tribute.
The big question on everyone’s mind is, will this re-release be able to drum up enough ticket sales to finally dethrone Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time. Frankly, it’s a little tough to say, especially when you try and dig into the numbers. As detailed on Box Office Mojo, Endgame has slowed to a crawl, and looking at the past week, there hasn’t been a single day where it brought in over $1 million. In terms of its total gross, it’s currently sitting at $2.7508 billion, which means that it’ll need to rake in close to $38 million to take the top spot.
It’s anyone’s game at this point. While a dedicated legion of fans will surely make another trip to their local theater to check out this re-release, for some, it might be hard to justify another ticket purchase, especially since details of the new footage are bound to make their way to the internet before some have a chance to see it for themselves. With Spider-Man: Far From Home hitting the big screen next week, Endgame only has one or two more weekends to catch up to Avatar, as movie theaters around the globe are preparing for the onslaught of summer blockbusters by rotating out older films for new ones.
Needless to say, Avengers: Endgame has one last chance to take the throne, and it’ll be interesting to see how things play out over the next week. Even if it doesn’t manage to come out on top though, we’ll still rest easy knowing it’s the most successful superhero movie ever, an achievement it will no doubt hang onto for some time.
