Remember a couple of weeks ago when the Avengers: Endgame re-release came and went and it didn’t manage to smash through Avatar‘s box office gross? We all took this to mean that the Marvel event flick was destined to be the second biggest movie of all time, with James Cameron’s sci-fi epic holding on to the top spot. However, we were overlooking one key thing: the re-release wasn’t dropped across the world at the same time.
This weekend, for instance, the re-release reached a bunch of new countries and earned Endgame another million dollars to add to the bank. This quiet, staggered release means that the movie has been sneaking closer to Avatar‘s total while we were all focused on Spider-Man: Far From Home, and its own impressive earnings.
As BoxOfficeReport.com shared, there’s now only roughly $8 million between the two films:

If Endgame continues to earn $1-2 million over the next few weekends as more countries get the re-release, that means the golden number might be cracked in a month or so. Perhaps even by the end of July, if things move quickly. With such a paltry number between it and Avatar‘s gross, it seems a cert that Marvel will come away with that coveted number one spot on the list of the world’s biggest movies. As Thanos might say, it’s inevitable.
Back in 2018, the theatrical run of Avengers: Infinity War didn’t cease until September 13th, so there’s no rush for the record to be broken. Marvel can probably sit back and enjoy their slow victory.
