One scene, in particular, shows a muddy Steve Rogers buckling up his shield – missing since Captain America: Civil War – and getting ready to go into battle, with the fearless soldier grimacing for whatever comes next. One fan summed up what all of us were thinking after watching this clip, writing:

Some criticized Avengers: Infinity War for not featuring Cap enough, but his heavy presence in the trailers leave us thinking Endgame will belong to him. And that’s probably not a good thing.

Another piece of evidence for Cap’s fate includes the repeated chant heard in the new trailer, with the various heroes decreeing they’ll do “whatever it takes” to save the universe. That’s not ominous at all, right?

OK, so let’s say this really is it for Cap and we just have to accept that. Can fans deal with this fictional death in a mature, dignified manner? No, is the short answer to that. In fact, the threat of Steve’s possible impending demise gave one person an existential crisis about why bad things happen to good people.

Another fan fears what long-term effects Cap’s death might have on their emotional stability.

Chris Evans has been rumored to be leaving the MCU behind after Endgame for years now. The actor’s heartfelt salute to his time in the franchise on social media following the end of filming didn’t help the rumors, either. That said, the Russos have stated that Evans isn’t done with Marvel yet, but is that just a ruse to keep us off the scent, or a promise that Cap won’t perish?

We’ll find out when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
