Avengers: Endgame is currently at the tail end of its seventh weekend in theaters, and while the movie’s box office momentum has slowed considerably at this point, the Avengers: Infinity War sequel continues to edge its way closer to matching Avatar’s record.
It was a few weeks ago that Endgame passed Titanic to become the second highest grossing movie of all time, and in the period since, the film has managed to get its global total up to almost $2.731 billion. This puts Endgame just $57 million behind Avatar’s figure of $2.788 billion. Relatively speaking, that may not sound like much, but as Anthony and Joe Russo’s latest flick continues to slip down the weekly rankings, it’s clear that Endgame still has a long journey ahead of it.
Back in April, the film got off to a phenomenally strong start, smashing Infinity War’s record for biggest opening weekend of all time. In the weeks that followed, however, Endgame couldn’t sustain its success nearly as well as James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi, and the abundance of competition that’s emerged over the summer certainly hasn’t helped matters.
Meanwhile, domestically, the film boasts a total of $824.4 million, putting Endgame comfortably ahead of Avatar’s $749.8 million haul ($760.5 million if you include the 2010 theatrical re-release). Nonetheless, this figure still puts Endgame well short of the top spot in North America, and right now, the $936.7 million total boasted by Star Wars: The Force Awakens is looking pretty untouchable.
Regardless, on a global level, Avengers: Endgame is still very much in this race, and in the coming weeks, it’ll be interesting to see how the film copes as new competition emerges. Speaking of which, the MCU’s own Spider-Man: Far From Home is expected to do pretty well for itself when the flick hits theaters on July 2nd.
