Avengers: Infinity War marks a defining moment in MCU history – you know it, I know it and the Russo Brothers know it, too.
It’s the culmination of a 10-year legacy, after all, and it’s poised to bring together all four corners of the MCU in spectacular fashion. And though it’s said to be markedly different from Avengers 4, Marvel’s 2019 sequel is all set to close the book on this current and downright unforgettable installment.
That’s a pretty big statement for a film that’s yet to reveal its actual title – apparently it’s enough to place Marvel fans on a knife-edge – but while promoting Infinity War to Yahoo Movies (h/t CBM), directors Joe and Anthony Russo touched on the Avengers 4 moniker and the ways in which Phase 4 will be drastically different from everything that has come before.
No, no. It’s going to be quite a long while before people see that title. We need people to see this movie, digest this movie, and then we can tell them what the next story is they’re going to see.
The film itself is also a complete, wholesome story – ditto for Avengers: Infinity War – which ought to allay fears that Marvel has split its superhero crossover in half to merely drive up ticket sales.
It’s a complete story. It’s got a beginning, middle and an end and the next movie has a beginning, middle and an end, in the same way that Civil War handed off to Infinity War and Infinity War will hand off to the next movie. It’s serialized storytelling without question so there is going to be a correlation, narratively, but we really wanted to make two distinct movies. We weren’t interested in making one long film and getting out the scissors and cutting the scissors and cutting it in half. We don’t find that a satisfying cinematic experience so this is a complete story, that’s a complete story, and they’re very different movies.
Looking further afield, Joe Russo touched base on Marvel’s Phase 4, which is expected to kick off with the so-far untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 next summer.
I think it’s massively different. I think that this is if Marvel has been writing a book for ten years, it’s the end of the book and someone is going to write a new book. Who knows what that new book will be but this is an ending and that’ll be a new beginning.
The Russo Brothers will bring the curtain down on this current iteration of the MCU when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019. Closer to home, Infinity War is expected to place Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on a collision course with Thanos later this month (April 27th), and Marvel’s universe will never be the same again.
