Thor: The Dark World isn’t exactly a fan favorite among MCU entries, and astrophysicist Jane Foster isn’t one of the most popular supporting players of the God of Thunder’s outings, either. Still, according to a new post on Reddit, there could be good reason for revisiting both, as the 2013 film potentially hints at some of the sci-fi developments to come in next year’s Avengers 4.
This short but intriguing forum post focuses on The Dark World scene in which Natalie Portman’s character is under Asgardian examination, as the team tries to figure out what the mysterious energy is that moves through her body and threatens her life. As Jane points out, the technology being used to examine her is a quantum field generator, or as they call it in Thor’s home world, a ‘soul forge’ (such is the ‘magic is science’ equivalence of this cinematic world).
So, what’s this got to do with the upcoming Avengers 4? Well, for one thing, a typically loose-lipped Tom Holland spilled the beans earlier this year that the Russo Brothers-helmed sequel will involve the Quantum Realm, which previously featured prominently in the Ant-Man movies. This and other signs that this trippy place will play a part in the next Avengers have prompted a slew of fan theories, albeit most of them involving Doctor Strange and Scott Lang a lot more frequently than Thor’s old girlfriend.
As for how Dr. Foster could fit into all of this, quantum things are evidently an area of expertise for her, and the Russos have already kinda-maybe teased her involvement in Avengers 4. Moreover, while Portman didn’t leave the franchise on the best of terms, she’s also suggested that a return isn’t completely off the table.
Is this all a bit of a stretch? Perhaps, but anything is possible until Avengers 4 finally hits theaters and sorts the facts from the myths on May 3rd, 2019.
