Avengers 4 co-director Joe Russo may have broken from the Marvel Studios norm of telling the public nothing when he hosted an online Q&A, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to drop all the big reveals quite yet, answering the inevitable question of the film’s official title by trolling his fans once more.
It’s a query that was saved for right at the end of the session. “Did only one person ask that question?” Russo replied, knowing full well that this wasn’t the case. After the interviewer joked in return that this wasn’t one of the more popular questions, the filmmaker then offered his real response:
“The next movie’s called Avengers…“
…and then the stream cuts out.
This is far from the first time that the Russo Brothers have taken pleasure in screwing with their info-hungry fans. For another two examples, Joe and Anthony Russo sent ripples across the internet earlier this year when they shared a pair of mysterious images that spawned a range of eccentric theories.
What’s more, some of the MCU cast has been getting in on the fun too, with Don Cheadle trolling his followers last month with fake hints of the title for the Avengers: Infinity War sequel. Mark Ruffalo, meanwhile, stirred up a lot of fans when he seemingly blurted out the name of the film when he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. But based on subsequent comments from Cheadle and Karen Gillan, it’s quite possible that the cast is as much in the dark as we are about what the flick is called.
Whatever its real title is, we’ll find out if Avengers 4 is worth all the fuss when it hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
