Coming out of Avengers: Infinity War, enthused film fans began dividing the movie’s deaths into two distinct camps: those that occurred after Thanos snapped his fingers, and those that occurred before.
The former category includes, well, half of the frickin’ universe, given the Mad Titan successfully obtained all six Infinity Stones – namely Time, Reality, Mind, Space, Power and the all-powerful Soul gem – and carried out his mass genocide, much to the horror of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
And then, there are those who kicked the bucket throughout the course of Infinity War, including Loki, Heimdall, Vision and, in a cruel twist of fate, Gamora, after Zoe Saldana’s Guardian was sacrificed at the altar on Vormir so that Thanos could acquire the Soul Stone.
Of course, there have been rumblings that Gamora was actually zapped inside the Soul Stone – ditto for all those characters reduced to dust – but at least according to Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, most of Infinity War‘s deaths are permanent, after all.
Said Markus:
Avengers 4 doesn’t do what you think it does. It is a different movie than you think it is. Also…[the deaths are] real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief.
As for McFeely, he’s quietly confident that Marvel’s creative team has what it takes to deliver a sense of closure with Avengers 4, which is said to be decidedly different from Infinity War and its full-blown assault on Thanos.

I think [Infinity War] is a fairly mature movie for a blockbuster. It’s got a lot of fun in it, obviously, but boy, it gets very mature. The second one is also mature. We’re going to own these choices, and hopefully surprise and delight you and get you invested. It’s by the same studio, the same filmmaking team. They were written at the same time, shot at the same time. They’re clearly connected, but they are definitely two different movies, one of which is dependent on what happened previous.
