Who is Carol Danvers, exactly?
That’s a good question, and one that was originally supposed to be answered by Avengers: Infinity War. Yes, it turns out Joe and Anthony Russo had initially captured scenes of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel for the third Avengers movie – likely for one of the customary post-credits scenes – before ultimately shelving the character’s MCU debut until 2019.
That means next year’s Captain Marvel solo movie will have the honor of introducing Brie Larson to audiences, before the former Air Force pilot enlists in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in time for Avengers 4. For those unfamiliar with her origins, Carol Danvers – or, more specifically, her DNA – was fused with that of an alien during a near-fatal accident.
The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight, so it should come as no surprise that Avengers 4 screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely simply can’t wait until Miss. Danvers lights up the silver screen. In fact, as Markus tells Screen Rant, Captain Marvel’s power is practically unprecedented when it comes to the MCU.
[We’re] super excited to have her—for one thing. You know, that movie does not exist yet so we’re following up on something that is good intentions at the moment. But that’s a power scale that right now doesn’t exist in the MCU.
She’ll also boast many of the same qualities that make up Captain America, after Markus noted in a recent interview that Brie Larson’s “smart, sassy” heroine will whip Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into shape.
She’s I should say, in some ways the closest to Captain America which is a weird, now rare kind of character which is sort of a person who’s right and knows they’re right and doesn’t really want to hear it when you tell them they’re wrong. So, with all these flawed, fucked up people and Quill who’s a mess and Tony who’s a massive ego all contorted. It’s fun to get another person with a clear vision in there and going, ‘Shut up.’
If 2018 belongs to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Thanos, then 2019 is really all about Captain Marvel, whose solo movie will be followed by the conclusive Avengers 4 on May 3rd, 2019. And it’s seemingly much, much different than Infinity War.
