Now this is interesting.
The Wrap’s reporting that Katherine Langford has joined the cast of Avengers 4. Given that the upcoming film will be the culmination of over ten years of MCU stories and looks like it’s set to wrap up the arcs of both Steve Rogers/Captain America and Tony Stark/Iron Man, it’s a pretty strange place to be adding someone new to the roster. This is bound to kick off a ton of speculation on who she’s going to be playing, too, so… well, let’s get to speculating!
Given that we’ve heard constant rumors that there’ll be a significant time jump in Avengers 4, I’m thinking she’ll be portraying an adult version of a character we currently know as a child. As far as I can see, that leaves just two options.
The first is that she’ll be playing the adult Cassandra Lang, daughter of Scott Lang/Ant-Man. This would seem to make a broad amount of sense given that she’s somewhat similar looking to Abby Ryder Fortson, who plays the role in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp. A slight spanner in the works though is that we’ve heard that Blended actor Emma Fuhrmann has been cast in the part. Still, that could have been a bit of miscommunication.
The second, and more likely option, is that she’ll be playing Lila Barton, daughter of Clint Barton/Hawkeye. Last seen in Age of Ultron, she’s familiar with each of the Avengers and Langford would be broadly the right age for the role. If the gossip is true and Hawkeye’s abandoned his old codename to become Ronin, then perhaps she could take up her father’s old mantle. We’ve also heard that at least some of the Barton family may have died in Thanos’ Snap, which could give her a powerful motivation to gain skills and avenge her family.
Given that Langford has reportedly already shot her scenes, we may have to wait until the first trailer to get a peek at whoever she’s playing, or perhaps even wait until Avengers 4 itself. Either way, though, this is promising casting.
