Avatar Sequels Get Release Dates For 2020-2025

The first Avatar came out back in 2009. Think about that for a second. It's been nearly a decade since audiences have visited Pandora and now, it seems like they'll be waiting a little bit longer for the chance to return, as Avatar 2 won't be with us until 2020. Or at least, that's what Fox is saying. If you recall, the film was actually set for 2014 initially, before being moved to 2018. Now, it's 2020 and according to the studio, the rest of the sequels will follow closely.

The first Avatar came out back in 2009. Think about that for a second. It’s been nearly a decade since audiences have visited Pandora and now, it seems like they’ll be waiting a little bit longer for the chance to return, as Avatar 2 won’t be with us until 2020. Or at least, that’s what Fox is saying. If you recall, the film was actually set for 2014 initially, before being moved to 2018. Now, it’s 2020 and according to the studio, the rest of the sequels will follow closely.

On the film’s official Facebook page, James Cameron revealed the release dates for each of the upcoming Avatar movies, and they’re all set to arrive between 2020 and 2025. You can check out the complete schedule below:

  • Avatar 2 – December 18th, 2020
  • Avatar 3 – December 17th, 2021
  • Avatar 4 – December 20th, 2024
  • Avatar 5 – December 19th, 2025

Plot details on the four sequels are obviously pretty scarce, but last we heard, Sam Worthington said that Avatar 2 will place a big focus on family, while also being like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

“This film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he’s been living in the world for a while now, so what’s this world he’s seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic.”

Sounds like an interesting angle, and with the huge advancements in technology that’ve been made since the first film came out, we can’t wait to be dazzled again by the beautiful world of Pandora. Whether or not these release dates will actually stick remains to be seen, given how many delays we’ve had, but apparently, shooting is set to begin this Fall, so it looks like Fox may be able to meet their target this time.

That being said, the other question is whether or not the 11 year gap will prove to be too long. Avatar was a huge hit upon release, but after over a decade of not seeing the franchise, will audiences still care about returning to this world and re-visiting these characters? The blockbuster landscape has changed drastically in the years since Cameron’s film released and with so many more properties all fighting for our attention, will Fox be able to get audiences invested in Pandora again? Time will tell.

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see how the studio goes about marketing the sequels after such a long gap, and with Avatar 2 set to head into production later this year, we imagine it won’t be long now before we start learning more about it.
